Award-winning historian John V. Quarstein will explain how, during the late 18th and 19th centuries, Virginia became the scene of aggressive canal development to link the Chesapeake Bay with the Ohio River Valley and Hampton Roads with Eastern North Carolina. The Dismal Swamp Canal – the oldest operating canal in the U.S – was a success, but not all of them were. We hope to see you there!
